Lamar boys seeded 7th, will host James Irwin this Saturday, Feb. 17; Lamar girls await winner of Vanguard/Rye
The Lamar Savage boys team tied for 5th place with Manitou Springs and La Junta but were seeded 7th due to Tri-Peaks League tiebreakers. They will host one of four TPL “Pigtail” or district play-in games on Saturday. The Savages (10-9) will take on the James Irwin Jaguars (4-14) at 1:00pm Saturday from the Lamar Community Building. The winner will advance to the district tournament and would next play at 6:00pm Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Colorado Springs Christian. A loss would mark the end of the season. The Savages recently defeated James Irwin on the road, 76-42 on Feb. 9.
The Lamar Lady Savages finished 3rd in the TPL and will next play at home Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 6:00pm versus the winner of the pigtail game between No. 6 Vanguard (11-6) and No. 11 Rye (2-16). In the regular season, Lamar won at Vanguard 63-20 and they defeated Rye twice, 54-17 in the season opener on Dec. 1 which was a non-league contest, and 60-15 in the league matchup on Dec. 16.
The top four seeds along with the pigtail game winners are guaranteed three games, win or lose, at the district tournament. The final two rounds will be played at Pueblo Central High School’s Ranson Court.
