Game 1: #6 Lamar 23, James Irwin 0 (3 inn.)
The Lamar high school varsity softball team was riding high after a dominating win over La Junta on Thursday, and they stayed hot on Saturday with two more district victories over James Irwin at Citizens Field. Lamar only needed to bat twice in game one, claiming a 23-0 win in three innings.
Three Lady Jaguar pitchers combined to allow only six hits, but walked 17 Lady Savage hitters, and the James Irwin defense committed eight errors to help Lamar win easily. Senior Morgan Reed and junior Dayle Trout each collected 3 RBI and Eads junior Miranda Mitchek scored four times.
In the circle, Trout threw a three-inning no-hitter while striking out seven Lady Jaguars. She three 46 pitches, 32 for strikes.
Game 2: #6 Lamar 20, James Irwin 0 (3 inn.)
It was more of the same in game two, as Lamar jumped ahead 10-0 after one inning. Junior Laci Coen doubled home a pair of runs and Holly junior Sydnee Howland tripled home two runs to highlight the frame. In the third, Wiley junior Haleigh Prosser doubled to left center to score a run, and five runs scored without an out being recorded and the game ended on the mercy rule.
In the circle, Prosser held the Lady Jags hitless and struck out five on 38 pitches, 31 for strikes. She faced the minimum of nine hitters. James Irwin pitching only walked six in the second game, but hit four batters and the defense committed seven errors.
Combining both games, the Lady Jaguars threw 231 pitches, while Prosser and Trout combined to throw 84 pitches.
Lamar is now 6-4 overall and 4-0 in Class 3A District 2, tied at the top with Rocky Ford. James Irwin drops to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in the district.
Next up for the Lady Savages will be a rematch with the Burlington Lady Cougars on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The teams met in Lamar on Aug. 25, where the Lady Savages claimed a 9-1 victory.
